PerthPerth is located on the West Coast of Australia. Offset by the vast tranquil waters of the Swan River, the beautiful city of Perth is a delightful place to live. Modern and vibrant, it contrasts with its historic counterpart - the port city of Fremantle accessible within 20 minutes by car from Perth.
Supporting both traditional and high technology companies industries, there are a number of major national firms based in Perth, and so lawyers can access high quality work and training, but with reasonable working hours and a balanced lifestyle. Lawyers are also offered greater responsibility at an earlier level, with strong prospects of progressing to Senior Associate and Partnership level.
Perth firms are always interested in lawyers with strong experience obtained overseas or interstate. Their preference would be for lawyers who have a link with the city because they are looking at individuals who will stay with the firm for a considerable period of time and are looking to lay roots.
In particular, good corporate and commercial, resources and native title lawyers are always in high demand.
Salaries vary across states and generally correspond to the cost of living in a particular city. See our Survey for further information about current market salaries.
Accommodation and TransportThe low cost of accommodation makes the city an attractive and highly affordable option for many lawyers when you compare it to the Eastern States. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in professionals keen to live in the heart of the city or in nearby Subiaco and Freemantle.
For those keen to live outside the city, minimal traffic and an excellent public transport result in a short and easy journey into work.
After HoursPerth has a clean and well planned central business district. The city centre provides for excellent shopping, as well as a vast range of restaurant, night life and entertainment venues. To the west of Perth at the mouth of the Swan River is the vibrant harbourside city of Fremantle. Its restaurant and café lined streets, historical sites and arts centres contribute to its magnetic charm and universal appeal.
Both Perth and Fremantle support a thriving arts and cultural community which has a social calendar that includes many music, theatre, wine, food, arts and craft festivals throughout the year. As home to people from around the world, Perth offers all the benefits of a cosmopolitan city, such as speciality food stores, places of worship and social networks which enable Perth’s diverse population to maintain their cultural lifestyles.
Perth’s sunny Mediterranean climate provides for a wide variety of outdoor activities. Sailing, swimming and windsurfing are popular water sports which are well catered for by the Swan River and Perth’s world-famous beaches. Other outdoor activities Perth residents enjoy include bicycle rides alongside the river, picnics in Kings Park, or meeting friends for coffee at al fresco (outdoor) cafés.
